The Scotiabank Giller Prize Announces 2005 Shortlist

Toronto, ON (September 28, 2005) – Today, in a morning press conference that drew over 100 media and members of the publishing industry, The Scotiabank Giller Prize announced its 2005 shortlist. Selected by an esteemed jury panel comprised of authors Warren Cariou, Elizabeth Hay and Richard B. Wright, the five finalists were chosen from 94 books submitted for consideration. Those books were submitted by 35 publishers from every region of the country.

The jury named the finalists. They are:

  • Joan Barfoot for her novel Luck, published by Knopf Canada
  • David Bergen for his novel The Time In Between, published by McClelland & Stewart
  • Camilla Gibb for her novel Sweetness in the Belly, published by Doubleday Canada
  • Lisa Moore for her novel Alligator, published by House of Anansi Press
  • Edeet Ravel for her novel A Wall of Light, published by Random House Canada

Jack Rabinovitch, who founded the Prize in 1994 in memory of his late wife, literary journalist Doris Giller, spoke at the press conference, as did Barbara Mason, Executive Vice President, Marketing, Sales & Service at Scotiabank. The finalists will be honoured and a winner announced at a gala black tie dinner and awards ceremony to be held at Toronto’s Four Seasons Hotel on November 8.

Public Library Promotion

The Scotiabank Giller Prize is delighted to be partnering with public libraries across the country for the ‘Guess the Scotiabank Giller’ promotion. The promotion began with the Toronto Public Library through a pilot project in 2003. Today, the promotion is running in over 10 libraries across Canada. The first winning entry drawn at each library will receive the entire 2005 shortlist library. The second winning entry will receive a copy of Prize Writing, The Giller Prize’s 10th Anniversary collection of essays from previous winners.

Harbourfront International Festival of Authors

For the second year in a row, the Scotiabank Giller Prize finalists will have the honour of reading at the IFOA’s Closing Night on Saturday, October 29. For more information, please visit www.harbourfrontcentre.com.

The Giller Light

Also on November 8 – and for the fourth year in a row – Frontier College will host The Giller Light Bash, to be held at its old stomping ground, The Steamwhistle Brewery. Their goal is to raise funds to help children and youth improve their reading and writing skills through an expansion of Frontier College’s Homework Clubs and its after-school literacy program for inner-city students. The Scotiabank Giller Prize awards $40,000 annually to the author of the best Canadian novel or short story collection published in English and $2,500 to each of the finalists. The Scotiabank Giller Prize is named in honour of the late literary journalist Doris Giller and was founded in 1994 by her husband Toronto businessman Jack Rabinovitch.
