Happy Holidays from the Scotiabank Giller Prize!
December 16, 2022
Dear friends,
And what a year it was! Twenty-twenty-two brought dazzling literary voices to the fore, with bold, inspired prose that exploded onto the page. You need only glance at this year’s shortlist to see the brave new worlds these authors built. All soaked in fierce imagination with broadly ranging themes including the search for home, the indelible anguish of grief, future worlds and the blaze of global, present-day disruption. And love. Always love.
We hosted 12 Giller Book Clubs and six Giller Power Panels with wonderful attendance and praise. Programming for both of these will return in January 2023.
For the second year in a row, we returned to a LIVE event in November! How thrilling it was to be in a room with people again. Please find some sights and sounds from the evening on our website. Along with books, hugs were the theme of the evening.
Meanwhile, we continue to reckon with social and racial injustice entrenched in so many institutional forms and expressions. During this time in history, we cannot ignore the importance of highlighting diverse writers and their voices. The Giller Foundation is committed to bringing these perspectives to light as well as reflecting that diversity on all our platforms including our panels, our jury and our Board of Directors.
Along with the book clubs and power panels, we doubled our efforts in highlighting books published in Canada between October 2021 and September 2022 on our 2022 Craving CanLit page.
As well, after a two-year forced hiatus, our Between the Pages tour roared back to life, sending our finalists on a seven-city North American excursion through October and November. The writers found much common ground with each other and were delighted to discover each other’s works.
We have many more fun events and programs planned for our 30th anniversary including more book giveaways, talks with authors, and other surprises along the way.
We will announce our brand-spanking-new jury in January – stay tuned!
Thank you for your support, feedback, and excitement surrounding the 2022 Scotiabank Giller Prize.
Please stay safe and have a wonderful holiday season.
